Edward W. Humphrey, a Native of Wales, Expires at Home of His Niece

Was Constable of the West Ward

Edward W. Humphrey, a Civil War veteran and a resident of Ebensburg or vicinity for the last fifty-four years, died Thursday morning from cancer of the stomach, aged seventy-three years. He expired at the home of his niece, wife of George Krug.

Edward W. Humphrey was born in Cemmer, Montgomeryshire, North Wales, May 1st, 1836. At the age of 19 he came to this country with a sister, Mrs. John A. Jones, now deceased, to join an elder brother and sister. The deceased was a stone mason by trade and worked at that business until twenty years ago. He was constable of the West ward of Ebensburg for a number of years. Ten years ago he went on the retired list.

Mr. Humphrey was married twice. His first wife was a Miss Davis of Cambria Township. To the union the following children were born: John Humphrey of Owanka, S. D.; William Humphrey of Lincoln Street, Johnstown; Elizabeth, wife of Winfield Reese of Napoleon Street, Johnstown and Martha, late wife of William Apel of Ebensburg. Mrs. Apel died about eight years ago. The first wife died about thirty years ago. The second wife of the deceased was Miss Margaret James of Cambria Township. No children were born to this union. The second wife died fifteen years ago. The deceased is survived by the two sons and daughter and two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Bennett of North Wales and Mrs. Mary D. Evans of Cambria Township. John Humphrey and his wife of Owanka, S. D., arrived here last Thursday.

The funeral will take place Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. There will be services at the Calvinistic Methodist Church, after which interment will be made in Lloyd's Cemetery. The Ebensburg G. A. R. Post and I. O. O. F., of which the deceased was a member, will take part in the funeral services.
