Died in Portage township, August 18, 1905, John Itell, in his 74th year. The deceased was born near Loretto in 1831. He was a son of the late Joseph Itell of Portage township, who was a native of Switzerland and who lived to the age of 92 years. His father and mother whose name was Catherine Eberly and who was of French descent both came to America in their early youth. The deceased is survived by one brother, James Itell of Portage township, and one sister, Mrs. Mary J. Gallagher of Cresson and also by the following children: Thomas J., the well known attorney of Johnstown; Jane, wife of Frank O'Neill of the Arlington Hotel, South Fork; Frances, at home and Albert of Pittsburg. His wife who was Miss Lucinda Eckenrode died several years ago. John Itell purchased and settled on the farm where he resided till his death about 42 years ago. He was well known in Northern Cambria and also had a wide acquaintance in the central and Southern part of the county. He was an ardent friend of education and the public schools and had served for 26 years as school director. He was also one of the directors of the First National Bank of Portage since its organization. His funeral which was very largely attended took place at Wilmore on Monday, August 21st at 10 o'clock a.m. where a solemn high mass of requiem was celebrated at St. Bartholomew's church by the Rev. J. B. Eagan, the pastor celebrant and Rev. Father McHugh of Pittsburg, and Ryan of Lilly, both former pastors as deacon and sub-deacon and Father James Graven of Ehrenfeld as master of ceremonies. His remains were consigned to their last resting place in the family lot in the new cemetery connected with the Catholic church.
